First off, I'm 19 and I know this is a question that is typically asked by people closer to 40, but I figure if I start worrying about my health when I'm young, then I'll have a better quality of life when I'm 40.
Anyway, I'm in college and I'm trying to develop good healthy habits. The following is what I've been doing for the past year (some of these things I've been doing for longer). Can you critique the following list and also give me suggestions on how I can improve it?
Diet Habits
Breakfast is always either cereal or oatmeal with a glass of milk and I always have breakfast.
Lunch always has fruit with it (a banana, some sliced cantaloupe, sliced honey dew melon, and some grapes). It often has a sandwich with it and some soup and sometimes pasta. I drink fruit juice at lunch (orange, apple, and grapefruit predominately).
Dinner is when I'll get my meat in. This varies between fish, chicken, and beef usually. I also have rice here. >
Best answer: 6 days ago I've cut back on the sodas and sugary items (once in a while, I'll have some). I dont' drink coffee and am wary of caffeine. Occasionally drink black teas. Drink a reasonable amount of green teas.
Other Stuff
I don't get as much sleep as I'd like (6-8 hours is what I usually get). I try to go to bed between about 11 and midnight. I wake up about 7:30 on weekdays and 9 on weekends. If I have a paper or other stuff like that, that'll cut into my sleep time. I vigorously exercise for about 2 hours, once a week. I'd like to have that up to three times a week (even if it's an hour apiece, but this is at the mercy of my schedule). I don't smoke, don't do drugs, and don't drink (though I'm told one glass of red wine a day is good for you). Best answer: 6 days ago I was wondering if I should drink a little if this is true. I also occasionally have times where I just induce relaxation. I don't really know how to describe this; I guess the best way to is to say I have learned how to hypnotize myself into a peaceful, relaxed state. It feels really good.
So, what am I doing right and what should I change?
Best answer:
Make sure you have the 5 food groups (basic 4 but with a little sugar) every meal. Get you recommended servings a day. You also want to exercise. It's still a little early yet, but keep regular check-up appointments. Monitor your cholesterol and make sure your weight stays stable. Also, you might want to monitor your blood pressure and watch your stress level. The blood pressure is still a bit early too, but the biggest thing is stress level. It's a big ager! |
