Interestingly enough, I am one of those stupid people who looked at a solar eclipse and reaped the fruits :P
I used smoked glass, but could barely see anything and stared various times without it to compare, I got left with a dark spot that I can only notice at night. (I cant see in the middle of my sight at night). That's because my retina's protection opened in the darkness from the solar eclipse.
On the other hand, when I was very young, I didn't believe my parents when they told me that I would go blind by looking at the sun, so I did it, and after like a minute of staring the worse thing that happened was a terrible glare mark that looked pretty psychedelic and a little bit of tears... no blindness. But who knows? maybe with a magnifying glass u can actually burn your eyes.
