do i need a root canal?

So I finally went into the dentist after my insurance kicked in and they did some xrays... She then tapped on my lower back tooth with this metal thing and I didnt have any sharp pains except for the feeling of discomfort of her hitting my tooth. Then she said I needed a root canal and since I hate pain, I did no schedule one. Is a root canal necessary even tho my tooth does no hurt? Do people get it done just because the dentist suggests it or after it causes them discomfort?

Ask her why she feels a root canal is necessary. Does the tooth show signs of infection on the x-ray?

It can be infected or have other trauma without actively hurting. When my two front teeth broke, it didn't hurt. I didn't start crying until AFTER I realized I broke my teeth because I knew how expensive it would be to fix them. The nerve could also be dead, and not infected. It hurts when it is infected.

Root canals do not hurt. The only thing that hurts is the initial needle to numb it up. Your mouth muscles may ache awhile from having to hold your mouth open for awhile, but the pain is trivial. I think stubbing my toe the other day hurt alot worse than the root canal. Root canals certanly hurt alot less than abcesses. Colorado, your teeth were probably also abscessed. Women also have a higher pain threshold than men, so you could be just a wimp.
