Best answer:
Uric acid is a breakdown product of "Purines", nitrogenous bases that are found in DNA, and many other organic compounds. Gout results from an inability to eliminate uric acid through the kidneys which results in deposits of microscopic uric acid crystals. This is probably due to genetic factors, coupled with a diet high in purines. Uric acid is not toxic, but the uric acid crystals can severely irritate and inflame areas where they become concentrated, such as the joints.
In the case of an acute attack of gout, the best solution is to take anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and swelling. A cold pack may also be very helpful.
In order to reduce uric acid levels, you should avoid foods that are rich in purines (see links below). Also, the drug "Allopurinol" inhibits the breakdown of purine into uric acid. The drug "Probenicid" increases the excretion of uric acid through the urine.
